DBT Intensive Training, Part 1

Since its initial development in the 1980s DBT has been shown to be effective for an array of problems related to emotion dysregulation. We know severe emotion regulation difficulties result in persons facing multiple problems across many areas of life and that these problems manifest in a variety of ways. The principles of DBT were specifically designed for cases which often present therapists with novel challenges. One of the benefits of a principle-based treatment is that it can be versatile enough to accommodate the specific situations, cultures, and contexts of the persons it serves. DBT has been studied and implemented in multiple countries across the globe.

DBT Intensive training is a comprehensive team-based program of study designed to provide teams with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide DBT. It focuses on both the establishment of comprehensive DBT programs and the clinical skills necessary to provide the treatment to persons with complex mental health problems. Intensive training in DBT includes 4 hours of content specific to risk assessment, management, and treatment of suicidal behaviors.

The program is divided into 2 parts that are designed to guide teams to accomplish four phases of DBT program implementation. While Parts 1 and 2 are described separately, they comprise a single program of study.

Part 1 (30 instructional hours)

    • Preparation
    • Knowledge Acquisition

Part 2 (30 instructional hours)

    • Implementation
    • Practice Improvement & Sustainability

In Part 1, lectures, demonstrations of treatment, and small group exercises are used to teach DBT theory and strategies in-depth. Upon conclusion of Part 1, participants consolidate and apply what they have learned with the help of practice assignments that are intended to guide the implementation process. Teams design and begin to implement their own DBT programs or to integrate DBT into an ongoing treatment setting. In Part 2, each team presents their work and receives expert consultation on specific cases and on their program, including protocols for specific treatment problems and adaptations of DBT.

This live remote instructor-led program of study consists of total of forty 90-minute modules delivered via video conference embedded in a learning management system (LMS) for a total of 60 instructor-led hours. While the typical length of the program is 6 months to 1 year, the modular nature of this program allows us to customize it to the schedule of our clients.

DBT Foundational training is a comprehensive program of study designed specifically for individual therapists or skills trainers who are members of an established DBT Consultation Team and have not completed DBT Intensive Training themselves. It is meant to assist teams who have hired new staff or experienced turnover by providing newer team members with training in the standard content of DBT. Foundational training includes 4 hours of content specific to risk assessment, management, and treatment of suicidal behaviors. Lecture, video, demonstration, and practice will be used to teach DBT theory and strategies in depth.

This live, remote, instructor-led course consists of twenty 90-minute modules delivered via video conference embedded in a learning management system (LMS) for a total of 30 instructor-led hours. Each module includes reading and homework tasks. While the typical length of DBT Foundational training is 4 – 6 months, the modular nature of this course can be customized to the schedule of our clients.

DBT for Persons with Complex Disorders

This 3-day training is intended to cover to key domains of knowledge required to provide standard DBT. It is intended for mental health providers who have conducted extensive self-study of DBT and who are actively practicing the treatment. Lecture, demonstration of treatment strategies, and group practice exercises will be employed to assist providers in moving from conceptualization of principles to clinical application.

DBT Skills Training: The Essentials

This introductory two-day workshop covers the fundamentals of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Skills Core Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness. Participants learn the goals of each skills module, and the targets for DBT skills training. They are also taught how to apply fundamental DBT strategies in skills training and coaching, so as to maintain dialectical balance in the endeavor. Clinical examples are used to illustrate specific skills training procedures. This course incorporates video of roundtable discussions of DBT experts, and demonstrations of a skills training class

This course is designed for all mental health professionals who want to learn DBT skills to improve their work with their clients. DBT skills are one of 4 modes of standard outpatient DBT. While attendance at this workshop is expected to enhance clinical work, the workshop will not result in participants knowing how to conduct DBT.

DBT for Complex PTSD

This 4-day workshop introduces Dialectical Behavior Therapy for complex posttraumatic stress disorder (DBT-PTSD). DBT-PTSD is tailored to treat adult PTSD following interpersonal violence such as childhood sexual abuse, including patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Most of these patients show severe problems in emotion regulation, negative self-concept, dysfunctional memory processing, and maladaptive social interaction. To target these core domains DBT-PTSD merges multiple evidence-based elements DBT principles, trauma-specific cognitive and exposure-based techniques, compassion-focused interventions, and behavior change procedures. The treatment program is designed to be delivered in a residential program (three-months) or in an outpatient setting (45 weeks). Data from a randomized control trial (RCT) in a residential setting (n = 74; 100% female) indicate that DBT-PTSD is acceptable to clients, does not lead to an exacerbation of suicide attempts or self-harm behavior, and results in reductions in PTSD-related behaviors as well as improvements in self-concept and social interactions. Data from a second multi-center RCT under outpatient conditions (n=200; 100%female) reconfirm the large effect sizes in all relevant domains as well as significant superiority of DBT-PTSD to Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT). DBT-PTSD is based on a psycho-social model, where typical dysfunctional behaviors can predominantly be understood as strategies to avoid or escape from trauma-associated primary emotions like powerlessness, threat, anxiety, disgust, humiliation, or sexual arousal. Corroborated by dysfunctional cognitive assumptions, dysfunctional behaviors such as self-injury, suicidal ideation, dissociation, or intoxication and problematic secondary emotions such as shame, guilt, self-hatred, or chronic anger, develop over time into problematic self-concepts which strongly impair quality of life. DBT-PTSD primarily aims to help patients a) revise their fear of trauma-associated primary emotions, b) question whether secondary emotions like guilt and shame fit the facts, and c) radically accept the fact of trauma in their lives in order to establish a life worth living.

The workshop covers the prerequisites, treatment targets, and structure of the treatment; and basic principles and rules. It covers the treatment modules of emotion regulation skills, mindfulness group therapy, discrimination training, cognitive interventions, and skills-assisted exposure. Teaching methods include slide-based presentation, video examples of master clinicians, demonstrations of treatment, and practice.

Participants will complete 8 consultation calls with subject matter experts in DBT for Complex PTSD after the workshop. These will occur in groups over the course of 3 months on a weekly schedule.

The workshop is intended for mental health professionals interested in treating complex PTSD using evidence-based principles and procedures. Basic knowledge of DBT is required.
