Dialectical Behavior Therapy Foundational Training™

Training Description

This five-day training is designed specifically for individual therapists or skills trainers who are members of an intensively trained DBT team, but have not completed Intensive training themselves. It is meant to assist teams that have hired new staff or experienced turnover by allowing newer team members to get trained in the standard content of DBT. Lecture, video, role-play and small group exercises will be used to teach DBT theory and strategies in depth. Participants agree to attend the entire five days of training, do their best to learn the material, and participate in a willing, committed manner.

The training requires that participants work in an active DBT® program, participate in a consultation team, and will continue learning DBT with a mentor. Only people who have attended the full ten days of the Dialectical Behavior Therapy Intensive Training™ are able to serve as mentors and sponsor team members to a Foundational Training.


Training Objectives:

1.   Use DBT research data to engage stakeholders in DBT.
2.   Adopt and practice a dialectical worldview in treatment.
3.   Incorporate DBT assumptions about clients into treatment.
4.   Explain the biosocial model of BPD/pervasive emotion dysregulation.
5.   Apply DBT principles and strategies during DBT consultation team meetings
6.   Structure treatment according to the target hierarchies for each modality (e.g., individual, skills training, phone).
7.   Complete DBT pre-treatment tasks (e.g., identify client’s goals, orient to DBT, obtain commitments).
8.   Assess long-term and acute risk for suicide.
9.   Apply DBT suicide crisis protocols.
10. Implement the levels of validation in DBT.
11. Conduct a chain analysis of an episode of a target behavior.
12. Generate and evaluate solutions for specific problematic links from a chain analysis.
13. Describe the goals of the DBT skills modules.
14. Describe the DBT problem-solving strategies (skills training, cognitive modification, exposure, contingency management).
15. Implement DBT stylistic strategies (reciprocal and irreverent communication).
16. Implement DBT case management strategies (consultation-to-the-client and environmental intervention).

Trainers

Randy Wolbert, LMSW, Zen Rōshi

Randy Wolbert LMSW, Zen Rōshi   is a DBT trainer with Behavioral Tech.  Randy trains and consults widely throughout the World, directing several large-scale system implementations. Prior to joining Behavioral Tech full-time, Randy served as Clinical Director of InterAct of Michigan, responsible for the programs of Assertive Community Treatment (ACT), DBT, Integrated Dual Disorders Treatment and outpatient substance abuse. Randy is a long time Zen student of Marsha Linehan Randy was recognized by Willigis Jaeger as a Zen teacher in 2016 and was confirmed as a Zen teacher in 2018 by Marsha Linehan.  In 2021 he received transmission as a dharma heir of Zen Master (Rōshi) Greg Mayers.  He has lead mindfulness workshops and Zen mindfulness retreats in the US, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, and Germany. Recently, he authored the chapter, “Modifying behavior therapy to meet the challenge of treating BPD: Incorporating Zen and Mindfulness.” In M. A. Swales (Ed). Janice Kuo, PhD

Dr. Janice Kuo received her doctorate in clinical psychology at the University of Washington where she was directly mentored and supervised by the developer of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Dr. Marsha Linehan. After receiving her doctorate, Dr. Kuo completed her internship at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University. Dr. Kuo is currently a faculty member at the PGSP-Stanford Psy.D. Consortium where she is actively involved research, teaching, and supervision. Her scientific work focuses on clarifying emotion-related dysfunction underpinning Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), suicidal behaviors, and trauma-exposed individuals and developing innovative treatments for these populations. Dr. Kuo has published numerous scientific articles on these topics and her work has been funded by the National Institutes of Mental health and the Canadian Institute of Health Research. She is one of the PIs of a large, multi-site trial (i.e., the FASTER study) comparing the clinical and cost-effectiveness of 12 months of standard DBT versus 6 months of standard DBT. Dr. Kuo is among the first cohort to be certified as a DBT therapist by the DBT-Linehan Board of Certification and she has conducted national and international workshops in DBT since 2005. In addition to her scholarship and teaching activities, Dr. Kuo is also the director of a private practice in the San Francisco Bay Area where she provides DBT and other cognitive-behavioral treatments.

Prerequisites

Participants should meet the following criteria:

  1. Be a current member of an Intensively trained team.
  2. Be invested in learning DBT to a high standard in order to better implement the treatment in their usual settings. Participants agree to attend and fully participate in the entire training in a willing, committed manner.
  3. Have learned DBT in one-day or two-day trainings and/or from self-guided study of the treatment manuals.
  4. Agree to read the following books before the Foundational Training:

Mental Health Counselors

Behavioral Tech is approved by a NBCC-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP™) and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP solely is responsible for all aspects of the program.

Behavioral Tech will email you a letter documenting your attendance upon successful completion of the activity. The allocated clock hours for this activity = 33.

Nurses

Behavioral Tech is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Nurses should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Continuing Medical Education is accepted by the ANCC for nursing certification renewal. The maximum AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ designated by Behavioral Tech for this activity = 33.

At the end of the training, each Nurse must complete and sign the provided form to record the number of credits claimed. Keep one copy & return the other copy to Behavioral Tech.

Psychiatrists

Behavioral Tech is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
